Day 106 - 109: The Road through Oregon

August 19 - 22
Day 106 - 109
Mile 1726.8 - 1820.3
Old highway 99/Ashland - below Goose Egg

Day 106 - Town food

We didn't set our alarms and let our bodies sleep as much as they needed. Lightweight made all of the hikers breakfast so we ate with navi, lightweight, molasses, caveman, and mark. We got a ride back to the trail with fireweed, a trail angel living in Ashland. We decided to have brunch at callahans before hitting the trail. We are finding town food is becoming more and more of a priority as we are getting sick of some of the food we have been eating for 3 and a half months.

Our waiter there told us that he wants to thru hike the pct in a few years and talked to us about our experiences so far. He is a writer and had a really cool outlook on what he thought the pct would be like for him. We hopped back on trail and started a 43 mile section of BLM land. It was one of the longest times so far that we have been outside of national forest/ national park/ state park/ wilderness land. It was pretty dry, hot, and barren but we found a rocky campsite with a beautiful sunset.

Day 107 - This Forest is Old

We continued our hike through BLM land today. It was pretty dry and the only view was of a city below.

It was pretty flat and easy hiking. Nate got stung by a bee for the first time while he was getting water from a faucet. Finally, we entered Rogue River National forest and it immediately got extremely pretty and we were so happy.

We camped in a forest of fir trees and ferns. There were a few bugs but not enough to ruin our spirits.

Day 108 - THIS is Oregon

The scenery and terrain today was exactly what we imagined Oregon would be. It was forested, flat, and green.

We went through one of the sections I've been excited about for a long time. The path was made of red lava rock in the middle of what appeared to be a lava flow. There were also awesome views of mt. McLaughlin.

We took a lunch break at a large creek and soaked our feet.
We entered sky lakes wilderness and passed mile 1800.

100 miles seem to go by so fast now. There were more Mosquitos than normal which was surprising because we were in a waterless section. We had to go off trail to a spring where we saw David, mark, and Brit. The hiking was so easy today that we hiked over 30 miles before setting up camp. We really enjoyed today and love Oregon so far!

Day 109 - The Rocky Road to Canada

Today was half forested and half exposed. Some of it was very rocky and hurt our feet.

It was pretty waterless today and we were forced to fill up at a creek that was pretty silty. We filled up for the 22 miles to crater lake and our packs felt pretty heavy with the extra weight. We found another cool flat spot and watched the sunset.

Tomorrow we will get to see crater lake!
