Day 110-113
Mile 1820.3-1915.
Below Goose Egg to Near Willamatte Pass
Day 110-Food Hop
Jenna and I both woke at 7 eager to get to Mazama village for some breakfast. We packed up quick and sped through the nine miles. We entered Crater Lake National Park within 3 miles of walking.
Once we reached highway 62 we had to walk 1.1 miles on the road and through some trails in order to get to Mazma village. As always the first place we went was the restaurant. It was a delicious place called Annie's Creek but it turns out we missed breakfast by ten minutes. We were happy to eat lunch though, can't go wrong with pizza, salad, shakes, fries, and chicken fingers. After lunch we went to the nearby store and retrieved our three resupply packages. My parents sent us a few tasty surprises, M&Ms and some homemade snicker doodles that tasted awfully good and fresh. While in Mazama we put our packs together, showered, ate more snacks, an chatted with other hikers. We did not stay long as we wanted to hike out a few miles to camp on the Crater Lake Rim. The hike to the rim was somewhat uphill but not to bad, we chose to hike Annies Creek Trail back to to the PCT instead of hiking the highway. We met a really cool guy along the way who wants to hike the PCT someday. The official PCT according to the PCTA is below crater lake. This trail has no views of crater lake and is mainly for equestrians. We chose to do the hiker PCT up along Crater Lake Rim because it is scenic and shorter.
Once on the Crater Lake Rim we went to a cafe at the Rim Village for some dinner and filled up our water for the upcoming 27 mile waterless stretch. We hiked on 1 mile from the village to a spot nestled in the woods. We are really excited to see Crater Lake at sunrise. We had an amazing sunset tonight.
Day 111-Epic Fail
Today we had the intent of waking up at 5:30 am and hiking the Crater Lake Rim during sunrise. Instead we woke up at 8 am and got hiking around 8:30. Oh well. It was nice sleeping in and the lake was still beautiful.
It did not take long to hike the PCT portion of the rim but we took it slow to enjoy the views. While hiking the rim we hit the geographic high point of the PCT for the rest of Oregon/Washington.
Once leaving crater lake behind the trail flattened out and it was smooth sailing the rest of the day. At lunch we ate some of the delicious cookies my mom made us. From where we camped last night to the next water was 27 miles so we were on conserve mode most of the day. There was a water cache at Highway 138 so we took 1 liter to get us to the next water. The rest of the day was hiking uphill around Mt.Thielsen. We entered Mt.Thielsen Wilderness of Umpqua National Forest.
It was beautiful hiking with amazing views of the surrounding countryside.
We ended the day a little past Thielsen Creek in the shadow of the mountain. We had to walk on our first snow in Oregon near here.
It is crazy to think we are 1/3 of the way done with Oregon and will be half way done in a few days. Time is starting to move fast!
Day 112-Through the Flames
We had an interesting experience last night. Sometime in the early am Jenna woke up and threw up unexpectedly. Luckily not in the tent. She felt great the rest of the night and all day. It was very curious. The hike today had lots of ups and downs and very forested with limited views. We hit the official geographic high point of the PCT.
This was the high point for people who didn't go up on to Crater Lake rim. The day went by quick and we piled the miles on just as quick. The PCT opened up from the Butte Fire today so we had no troubles there. When we got to the area that had burned we encountered many firefighters. A very friendly firman escorted us through the area that had burned. Many logs and trees were still smoking but there was no danger to us. We hiked on and at forest road 60 we decided to take the Oregon Skyline Trail (OST) in order to get to Shelter Cove Resort for our next resupply. We got a few miles down the trail an decided to call it a day. It was a great day with great weather!
Day 113-Shelter Cove Resort
Well, we woke up late again today. 8 am seems to be the norm in Oregon. We hiked through the remainder of the morning through a forest below Diamond Peak. It was very pretty and the Diamond Peak wilderness was awesome.
We finished off the miles of the OST easily and made it to Shelter Cove Resort around 3. Several other hikers were there doing their resupply. We did our resupply and rested a few hours before heading off back down trail.
While at the resort we talked to our friend Annie who is planning to meet us at Cascade Locks. We are excited to see her! A few miles down trail we hit highway 58. A few hundred feet down the Highway was a pizza restaurant at Willamette ski resort opened weekends, and fortunately for us it was Sunday. We ordered a large cheese pizza for both of us and some sodas. Jenna said we couldn't eat a large but I disagreed. We ended up eating all bit two pieces. I could have easily eaten the last two pieces but we wanted to save them for on trail lunch the next day. We hiked on another few miles and made camp. It was a great day and we feel like we accomplished a lot, 22 miles with two long stops.
